The process of determining which Rural fire service delivery model your community requires begins with a Basic Rural Fire Risk Assessment.
The assessment is a practical information gathering and analysis exercise intended to identify and create a Community Fire Risk Profile. The assessment report recommendations shall include the type of fire suppression system options, staffing requirements and training packages which are best suited to the needs of the community. Also, the profile will aid in determining the appropriate fire prevention and life safety programs it can incorporate to enhance the effectiveness of the community fire protection model.

The examples listed are not packaged kits, but flexible service suggestions to assist you in finding your starting point. These examples illustrate the different levels of fire service options which are based on risk management, capacity and budget. Each example shows the type of fire service option that would typically fit a community with a particular demographic profile, housing type and available first responder staffing level.
These cost projections are for budgeting considerations only and use generic pricing from local distributors. Prices may vary with the unique context of each community. For example; if the community already owns a building that could be converted for use as a fire station then you could reduce your total budget accordingly.
1. Basic Rural Fire Service: $75,000 to $130,000
(Approximately 12% cost of a Traditional Fire Service)
* Minimum system for a small community of 5-25 residential homes or cottages.
STAFFING REQUIREMENTS:
› This system assumes that the community has at least 4 people, but as many as 10, who are willing to be trained as a rural fire fighter and are committed to respond to a fire emergency in their community.
APPARATUS:
› ATV/Utility vehicle equipped with appropriate fire suppression system.
FIRE FIGHTING EQUIPMENT:
› All fire fighting equipment is included; Ladders, hose, nozzles, extinguishers, small equipment, etc.
FIRE STATION:
› 160 - 190 sq. ft. heated insulated fire container complete (ATV/equipment) delivered to the clients location or
› An existing single vehicle heated garage.
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT:
› NFPA 1971-2007 Edition Standard structural fire fighting "Full Turn-out clothing package".
TRAINING:
› 32 hours of combined classroom and hands on equipment training at your location.
2. Standard Rural Fire Service Option: $110,000 to $200,000
(Approximately 20% cost of a Traditional Fire Service)
* Minimum system for a small community of 25-60 residential homes or cottages.
STAFFING REQUIREMENTS:
› This system assumes that the community has at least 4 people, but as many as 12, who are willing to be trained as a rural fire fighter and are committed to respond to a fire emergency in their community. The system is designed to work with a community which has a water supply system.
APPARATUS:
› ATV/Utility vehicle equipped with appropriate fire suppression system which may also include a 250 gpm trailer mounted pump.
FIRE FIGHTING EQUIPMENT:
› All fire fighting equipment is included; Ladders, hose, nozzles, extinguishers, small equipment, generator, portable lighting, etc.
FIRE STATION:
› 190 sq. ft. heated insulated fire container complete (ATV/equipment/trailer pump) delivered to the clients location or
› Renovation of an existing single vehicle heated garage or shop.
› Design and plans for a 300 - 800 sq. ft. satellite style fire station, construction to be arranged by client.
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT:
› NFPA 1971-2007 Edition Standard structural fire fighting "Full Turn-out clothing package".
› Optional Nomex fire resistant coveralls, NFPA 1971-2007 Edition Wildland fire fighting boots.
TRAINING:
› 32-40 hours of combined classroom and hands on equipment training at your location.
3. Rural Village Fire Service Option: $175,000 to $395,000
(Approximately 40% cost of a Traditional Fire Service)
* Minimum system for a community of 50-200 residential homes or cottages.
STAFFING REQUIREMENTS:
› This system assumes that the community has at least 6 people, but as many as 12, who are willing to be trained as a rural fire fighter and are committed to respond to a fire emergency in their community. This system is designed to work with a community which has a dedicated fire fighting water supply (hydrant) system.
APPARATUS:
› 3/4 to 1 Ton pick-up or flatbed vehicle equipped with 120 gal Compressed Air Foam fire suppression system.
› 250 gpm trailer mounted pump.
FIRE FIGHTING EQUIPMENT:
› All fire fighting equipment is included; Ladders, hose, nozzles, extinguishers, small equipment, generator, portable lighting, etc.
FIRE STATION:
› Renovation of an existing single vehicle heated garage or shop.
› Design and plans for an 800 sq. ft. satellite style fire station, construction to be arranged by client.
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT:
› NFPA 1971-2007 Edition Standard structural fire fighting "Full Turn-out clothing package".
